My youngest son was excited when I asked him to help me come up with a kids craft for the 12 Days of Christmas Ideas. I had found these cute wooden monogram letter ornaments in Target’s dollar spot but I hadn’t decided what to do with them just yet. He spotted them in my stash and the rest is history. After he shot down a couple of my ideas (he’s a very cutthroat crafter) he finally liked the idea for a Yarn Wrapped Monogram Letter Santa Ornament. I’m pretty sure the opportunity to make pom poms with my pom making tools had everything to do with it. I think this particular craft is perfect for the tweens and teens in your house and maybe some craftier younger kids, too.

Yarn Wrapped Monogram Letter Santa Ornament Steps

1: Trim off any existing hangers. Put a little bit of the tacky glue on the end, front and back of your letter.

2: Press the end of your red yarn into the glue, right at the edge of the letter, wrap around and do the same on the other side. Let this dry completely before you start wrapping. He held it in place for about 10 minutes while it set. This is why fast drying glue is key. Older kids may want to use a dab of hot glue if they can be careful.

3: Now start wrapping the letter. For the L, he had a tricky corner, so he had to adjust and wrap a little extra at different angles. Depending on the letter, they may have to cut and glue different pieces of yarn to get complete coverage.

4: When you get to the end, once again put a bit of glue on the front and back of the letter. Wrap the yarn around to the end and snip it off about an inch past. Let the glue dry completely.

5: While you’re waiting for the glue to dry, work on the pom pom. With this particular tool, you wrap a long length of white yarn around both notches. Then you wrap the yarn around and around and around until it’s nice and fat and almost straight across at the bottom.

6: Snip off the yarn from the skein and then cut the yarn on the right notch. Pull it through, you should see that long tail getting pulled through, and tie it off in a double knot. Then you run your scissors through that groove in the middle, cutting through all the layers of yarn.

7: Fluff your pom pom and give it a nice even haircut, leaving those two long tails. The kids love this part. Tie the tail ends together in a knot.

8: Once the red letter is completely dry, scoot the red yarn over where you see the hole and poke the white knot through it and pull. Voilá, ornament!

That’s it! I really broke down the steps so the kids could get more details, but this Yarn Wrapped Monogram Letter Santa Ornament took maybe 10 minutes to make, not including glue drying time. If you used hot glue, it’d be super fast to make. What’s great about these, too, is they don’t have to be Santa themed or colored at all. Kids can make these in any color they choose, even making the pom pom a different color. They could also add more pom poms if that’s their passion. I find that kids love crafts even more when they have choices in the design and color choice. So what color(s) would you choose for your ornament? Mine would be purple.
