Who’s ready for another Thrift Store Challenge project? A lot of us probably had grandmothers who had all kinds of different “crystal” bowls, plates, and other knickknacks decorating their houses. I don’t hate on crystal, but if it’s going to be clear, I want it to be nice, like Waterford, but that stuff is crazy expensive! I do really like all of the pretty, brightly colored “crystal” (cut glass) items I find at Target and Home Goods, though. So, I thought I’d try to Update and Recolor Thrift Store Crystal using the same type of glass paint I used last month for my Easy DIY Sea Glass Vases, but using a slightly different technique. I have to tell you, I love this little bowl a million times more now that it’s pink! You can still see all of the detailed cuts in the glass but I think it accentuates the shape of the bowl a lot more.
Be sure to Save it on Pinterest if you want to make it later!

Update and Recolor Thrift Store Crystal
Materials
- Crystal/ Cut Glass Bowl or Vase, Etc.
- Frosted Glass Paint or Spray Paint
- Foam Pouncer (If using bottle paint)
Update and Recolor Thrift Store Crystal Steps
1. Clean and dry your crystal item. This is actually a relatively nice piece! There are no “seams” and it’s pretty heavy.
2. You can either squeeze the paint directly on to the inside of the crystal bowl and then pounce it to smooth it out. Or you can squeeze paint directly onto the foam pouncer and apply it to the inside of the bowl. Let it dry completely. For real, go watch a show or something and then come back.
Note: If you like the color as is, in this lighter shade, no problem, you’re done!
3. Apply a second coat of paint. Let this one dry completely, too. Go watch some more TV, or wash some dishes, no, watch some TV. I think one video I watched said it takes three months to completely cure, so if you’re going to add items to the bowl, be careful not to scratch the paint.
Note: If you use Krylon’s Frosted Spray Paint, it should only take one coat, unless you want it more opaque.
That’s it! It’s so easy to Update and Recolor Thrift Store Crystal I want to make more! I think it would be fun to make some with seasonal colors to go along with holiday decorations as well as some to go along with my current decor. I’ve also been hired to create bohemian-themed tables for a wedding reception, so I’ve been experimenting with different glass painting techniques to use on all of the vases we find at thrift stores and Dollar Tree. When you have 15 tables and 8 to 10 vases per table, the cost can add up really fast, so I’d rather custom color a lot of them myself.
If you’d love to see even more fun and beautifully painted glass projects over at Favecrafts! I definitely plan to try one of those mercury glass tutorials for the wedding decor.
