While looking around my tornado of a craft room for inspiration for the Monthly De-stash Challenge, I came across one of the adult coloring books my kids got me for Christmas in the past couple of years. Exactly how many pages have I colored? Zero. I have colored zero pages. I definitely made sure I bought the 100-color box of Crayola colored pencils so I was properly prepared to color anything, but I never actually cracked open one of the books, so I decided to color one of the pages and show you how to Transform Your Coloring Page into Home Decor.

Why? Because while adult coloring pages have become hugely popular, I usually have my hands full making crafts and tutorials for you guys, lol. Also, while some of you may find it relaxing, it actually stresses me out. See, when it comes to color, I become obsessive and need for all of the colors to coordinate and I spend far too much time planning the whole thing out. Also, this took me two whole hours to color! Is that normal? Are hand cramps and numb fingers normal? Again, I don’t find any of that relaxing. BUT, holy moly how I love the final result! All of that hard work couldn’t stay in a coloring book though so I’m very happy with the end result.

one: Paint the front and sides of the canvas so that it is covered completely. I painted three coats to get complete coverage. While that dries, you can work on the rest.

two: I won’t explain how to color your page, lol, but for home decor purposes, I chose colors that compliment what I have in my house already. This includes deep reds, yellows, oranges, and greens. Color darkly so your colors pop later.

three: Cut out the colored design from your coloring page. Make sure to use precision-cut scissors to get into the detailed spots. I chose a mandala design because we have mostly Asian, Indian, and Eastern decor. Yours could be an animal, a scene, or whatever suits your taste.

four: On a dry painted canvas, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the area you plan to place your colored cut out.

five: Carefully place the cut out in the center of the canvas, starting with one edge and smoothing as you go. You may need to use a straight edge to gently smooth out any bubbles. Let this dry a bit before applying more Mod Podge. If the paper gets too wet, it may tear.

six: Starting in the middle of the cut-out, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge, moving towards the edges. Don’t apply it going towards the edge of the cut-out or it may lift it. Let this layer dry completely. Check to see if it needs one more coat.

seven: (Optional) Use an oil-based paint pen to apply accents to your colored cut-out to add dimension. Let that dry completely.

That’s it! If you paint your canvas and let the layers dry while you color, you can Transform Your Coloring Page into Home Decor in no time. Well, depending on how fast you can color. This whole project took me about two and half hours, but I was being slow and my page was pretty intricate. Have you turned any of your coloring pages into art or home decor projects? I’m thinking of all kinds of potential projects now! I just need to color faster next time, lol.

  1. Thanks so much for sharing this beautiful idea. I love coloring mandalas, and have many finished, as well as many other designs. My favorite activity during covid. I love having ideas to put them into use, instead of tucked away.

    1. Thank you, Jessica! Now I’m thinking of more ideas and I think I need to make sister for this one and frame them.

  2. This turned out so good!!! I love the colors. I would have never thought about using gold as the background, but it’s perfect.
