So did you find the clue for this month’s stitch? If not, take a look at the bottom of the right sidebar on desktop or the very bottom of the post on mobile. Yep, It’s a literal photo of seagulls flying above a beach.

For this month’s specially-themed stitch, I really wanted to find a way to incorporate the seagulls into the stitch pattern since they’re so iconic to this era and album covers. That was easier dreamed than done, however!

After scouring stitch ideas online, I came across the arrow stitch and instantly thought of modifying it to look more like bird wings. Then the mesh stitch adds the perfect backdrop since its so light and airy.

Alright, now go grab your hook & yarn and get started! Don’t forget to share your finished blocks in our Eras Crochet Along Facebook group! I just love seeing all of your different versions and yarn choices!

Measurements

The finished block will measure approximately 6″ by 48″ with the blanket yarn.
It will measure approximately the same using two strands of #4 medium-weight yarn.
This stitch tends to pull the yarn tighter so you will need to go up one or two hook sizes.
The primary goal is for your blocks to be close in width (48″) and length (6″) to each other for joining. Use your first era’s block as a guide.

Gauge

5 mesh stitches = approximately 4 inches
9 mesh stitch rows = approximately 4 inches

Special Stitches

mesh stitch:
1 single crochet, chain 1 stitch/ skip 1 stitch, repeated. Singles always go into singles from previous row.
modified arrow stitch:
1 single crochet, chain 3, skip 1 chain space and 1 single crochet.
Front post slip stitch in next chain space 2 rows below. So on row 4, use the chain 1 from row 2 below.
Chain 3, skip 1 single crochet and 1 chain space, single crochet in next stitch back on current row.
Chain 1, skip 1 space. (8 stitches wide)
Note: front post slip stitch is done vertically by inserting the hook below the chain 1 then up through to the front under the chain 1. Yarn over then pull that loop through the 1st loop on hook as a slip stitch.

Instructions

Use a 10.00mm to Chain 109.
Switch to a 9.00mm hook for the remainder of the pattern.

Row 1: Single crochet in 2nd chain from hook. Single crochet into each chain across. (108 single crochets) Chain 1, turn.

Row 2: Single crochet in the 1st stitch. Chain 1 and skip 1 stitch. (The mesh stitch is: 1 single crochet, chain 1 stitch/ skip 1 stitch.) Mesh stitch across 52 more times. The last 2 stitches are both single crochets. (108 stitches) Chain 1, turn.

NOTE: The end of every even row will always end with 2 single crochets and odd rows will always begin with 2 singles crochets as a way to keep the total stitch count right when using a 2-stitch repeat that ends with a chain and skipped stitch.

Make sure you have 108 single crochet stitches before you cut, tie off, and weave in your ends.

Cut, tie off, and weave in ends.

NOTE: The final row isn’t just single crochets this time around because it I wanted to fit 5 birds and an extra row would have made it more than 6″ inches tall. But if yours can fit another row because of your tension, just make row 13 a mesh stitch row and add a 14th row with all singles across.

So what do you think of these little yarn seagulls? If you’re a more advanced crocheter, you could experiment with adding that center slip stitch to a different row than suggested and see how the wings can change positions from more open to more closed.
