I was so excited to make these DIY Rustic Carrots for Easter! When I was shopping in Joann’s, I saw two different types of rustic-looking carrot decorations (pictured below) and I thought to myself, “I could make these.” How many of you have done that? Well, this time, I actually did it. I had a lightbulb moment that I could use a cone and a ball to make the shape and I knew I had gobs of jute cord. Do you know what the funniest part is? I had most of these supplies left over from Halloween and Christmas! Yep, I got the orange jute at Target during Halloween and the cones and foam balls at Dollar Tree during Christmas. The green jute is the only thing I got from the Easter selection at Dollar Tree.

Another thing I love is that you could do this craft in so many different ways with the same cone and ball form. You could use baker’s twine, raffia, yarn, metallic cord, decoupage, and I’m sure you could think of even more. For this version, though, I used jute cord. You may notice that one carrot is a different color of orange. The 20 yards on the original spool wasn’t quite enough for three, so I had to find a different spool. I personally like the variation in color, though, so it’s all good.

Instructions

Step 1: Glue the foam balls into the cones. I ran a bead of glue along the inside rim of the opening and then pushed the foams ball into it. Let them dry completely.

Step 2: Starting at the tip of the cone, glue the orange jute cord over the tip. Clamp with a clothespin and let it dry completely. This will help you get the spiral wrap done more easily.

Step 3: Slowly glue, wrap, and repeat until you get to the top edge of the cone. Be sure to wrap the jute cord snuggly around the cone.

Step 4: Once you reach the edge of the cone, set the carrot, ball side down, so the orange jute cord can dry. Otherwise, you will get glue all over your hands and it may pull the jute off of the cone. I used a bottle to balance my carrot on to dry.

Step 5: While you are waiting for the carrot to dry, cut eight, 8-inch lengths of green jute cord.

Step 6: Tie all eight strands together into one knot.

Step 7: Dig a hole in the foam ball with the scissors. I just poked the scissor point in and turned it.

Step 8: Put glue in the hole and insert the green jute knot and press for a few seconds.

Step 9: Continue gluing the orange jute cord around on the foam part. Try to make sure the strands are close together so the foam doesn’t show through. Spiral it around until it covers the base of the green knot. Set the carrots on a surface like wax paper where they won’t stick while they dry completely.
