Welcome to Day 3 of the 12 Days of Christmas Blog Hop! Today we all made Snowman projects. So fun! These are great because most people like snowman decorations, am I right? I was inspired to make this Crochet & Cross Stitch Snowman Pillow because my husband and I were looking at Christmas pillows to brighten up our living room and wow were they pricey for something we can’t use all year! Lucky for us I’m a little bit crafty. At first, I thought I’d crochet the snowman face into the pattern, but I hate changing yarn and creating a million tails to tuck in, don’t you? I also enjoy cross stitch, so I thought, why not combine the two!? I think it worked out pretty well. Let me show you how you can make one for yourself in just a day. But first…

Crochet & Cross Stitch Snowman Pillow
Materials
- 1-10.5 oz Skein White Bernat Blanket Yarn
- 1 Skein Black Yarn
- 1 Skein Orange Yarn
- Size N Crochet Hook
- Size J Crochet Hook
- Plastic Yarn Needle
- Scissors
- 14″ x 14″ Pillow
Crochet & Cross Stitch Snowman Pillow Steps
1. Chain 30 with your white blanket yarn.
2. Chain one extra, turn and single crochet into only the back loop on the second chain.
3. Repeat the single crochet until the end of that row. Chain one, turn and single crochet through both loops on the second chain. Continue to single crochet through both loops for 58 rows. Tie off both ends and weave them in. Ugh. I hate doing that part.
4. Fold the white crocheted piece in half. Count the single crochet openings to see where you will be placing your cross stitch. Look at the pattern down below and use a pin or clip to mark where your pattern will begin and end so you can make sure it’s centered. The top of the pillow will be the fold of the white crocheted piece. It’ll be easier if you start at the bottom. I’ve numbered the pattern accordingly to make it easier, too.
5. Trim off 5 three-yard pieces of the black yarn. Thread one end of one into the plastic yarn needle and pull until the ends are even. Do not knot it. You’ll use one three-yard piece per coal chunk.
6. Follow the pattern below to cross stitch the coal mouth pieces. Use the “holes” or openings in the single crochet stitch of your white crocheted piece like you would the holes in aida cloth.
7. Use the yarn needle and the J crochet hook to weave the beginning and end pieces into the stitches just like you would with cross stitch. I wish I had a super tiny hook to use with cross stitch! It really helps to weave in those ends.
8. Trim off 6 three-yard pieces of the orange yarn. Thread it onto the needle like in step 4 and cross stitch the nose following the pattern below. Finish the ends the same way you did with the black yarn.
9. Trim off 2 four-yard pieces of the black yarn. Thread another length of black yarn onto the needle. Cross stitch the coal eyes as shown in the pattern below. Finish like the others. How cute is that!?
10. Fold the white crocheted piece in half, matching up the edges precisely. Measure and cut a 2-yard length of white yarn. At the fold, use the J crochet hook to poke through, grab the piece of white yarn, and pull it through. Tie it off with a double knot and tuck away the end.
11. Flip that yarn over to the back and reach through with the crochet hook to pull the yarn through the next stitch opening. Continue flipping and pulling through all the way to the end of that side and a little around the corner. We’re using this looping “stitch” to sew the white cover together. Insert the pillow now.
12. Continue this looping stitch for the rest of the way around to the other fold. Tie it off in a double knot and tuck in the end. Trim excess if needed before you tuck.
That’s it! This Crochet & Cross Stitch Snowman Pillow really comes together pretty quickly. You could easily make it in one day if you try. Just binge watch something on Netflix and crochet and stitch away! So have you ever tried a project like this, combing crochet and cross stitch? What did you make? I’m wondering if this method would translate to a blanket for a larger pattern. Hmm.

I’ve got to show this to my daughter who loves to crochet. She’d love this in her home! Pinned 🙂
Oh my gosh, how cute!!! Thanks for sharing
Very cute combining the crochet with the look of Cross stitch too. I love that thick, fluffy yarn – I’ll bet that’s one comfy pillow (assuming you let anyone lay on it haha!)
I love this! Your tutorial makes it look so easy too!
Tania
Thank you! It really is pretty easy. Notice how I didn’t use crochet code? Yeah, I have a lot of trouble translating those, so I make my own patterns and then just spell everything out so other people like me can make stuff, too.
