I decided to do a completely different look with my outdoor Christmas decorations this year; I’m shooting for Candyland/ Sugarplum Fairy inspired decorations. The first thing I thought of was a Candy Cane Wreath. The red and white stripes would pop and add a whole lot of color and fun to my ordinarily blah yard. I’ve made two wreaths so far using this technique, the Spooky Skeleton Wreath and the Fall Harvest Wreath, each one using slightly different methods. This wreath takes a special step because you will be cutting across the striped diagonally instead of the typical bottom to top. I found this cute striped plastic table cover at Hobby Lobby, but many places carry them in the months leading up to Christmas. I found the peppermint embellishments there, too. Let’s get started!

Candy Cane Wreath
- Red and White Striped 54″ x 108″ Rectangle Plastic Table Cover
- 14″ Foam Wreath Base
- Peppermint Candy Floral Embellishments
- Clear Packing Tape
Step 1: Unfold the first part of the striped table cover so that the shortest side is still folded. It should be approximately 14 inches by 108 inches. By leaving this part folded, it will be much easier to cut.
Step 2: Cut off two, four-inch strips. Unfold the strips.
Step 3: Take one of the striped strips (say that five times fast) and use the clear packing tape to tape it to the wreath at a slight angle.
Step 4: Wrap the strip around the wreath, making sure no foam shows through.
Step 5: Once you get to the end of that strip, use the packing tape to tape it to the wreath.
Step 6: Start again with a second strip, taping it over the end of the first piece at a slight angle. Trim off any excess. I used two of these strips to cover the whole wreath.
Step 7: This is where we switch it up. At a diagonal, cut off a 4-inch wide corner from the leftover table cover.
Step 8: Then, at a diagonal, cut the remaining table cover into 4-inch wide strips. I’ve included a short video to show how I made consistent cuts.
Step 9: Unfold all of the 4-inch wide strips into the long, zigzag pieces. Cut at each bend. Each strip will yield four pieces.
Step 10: Tie the 12-inch pieces around the wreath with a double knot.
Step 11: As you tie the pieces around the wreath, skew and turn them so the knots aren’t lined up perfectly. This will give the wreath a fuller look.
Step 12: Tie the pieces around until you have covered the entire wreath. At this point, you may want to trim some of the tied strips if they seem too long to you. I think varying lengths look more interesting as well.
Step 13: Attach the peppermint embellishments to the wreath by weaving the stems through the ties. I placed both of mine to the left and slightly up.
Step 14: Use a stick or paintbrush to create an opening on the back top center tie. Insert a leftover piece of striped table cover and tie in a loop. You can use this to hang your wreath.
That’s it for the Candy Cane Wreath! I know tying the strips on can become tedious. My secret is to leave my studio and plop down in front of the TV while I tie them. I can usually get them all tied within one episode. I think the end result is very bright and candy cane-like and definitely goes with my Candyland theme. Hmm, speaking of which, these would be great for a Candyland-themed birthday party, too!
